The Marathon Letourneau jack-up drilling rig, which entered service in 1979, is classified as a PHRS, A1, Self-Elevating Drilling Unit under the Liberian flag. The rig is designed for offshore drilling operations with an overall length of 207.33 feet, a width of 176.00 feet, and a draft of 11.2 feet at the load line.
Featuring a triangular leg structure, each leg measures 393.82 feet, enabling the rig to operate in water depths up to 280 feet. Its 160-foot-high pyramid derrick is equipped with a hook-load capacity of 1,000,000 pounds, allowing it to drill to depths of up to 20,000 feet.
The rig can accommodate up to 100 personnel and has a displacement of 14,692 kips. It is capable of handling a variable load of 4,373 kips while in operation and 2,374 kips during transit. The rig can achieve a transit speed of up to 4 knots, assisted by a 9,000 horsepower sea tug.
The drilling equipment includes Continental Emsco C2-2000hp drawworks with a 1,000-foot 1-3/8″ drill line, a Continental Emsco T3750 rotary table with a 37.5″ opening, and a Varco TDS-4S electric top drive rated at 500 short tons. The rig is fitted with three Continental FB1600 mud pumps rated at 5,000 psi and four Derrick linear shale shakers.
The rig’s power is supplied by three EMD diesel engines, each rated at 2,290 horsepower at 900 RPM, while emergency power is provided by a Caterpillar D399 diesel engine rated at 1,500 kW.
Storage capacities include 2,118 barrels of fuel oil, 1,756 barrels of liquid mud, 4,600 barrels of drill water, 2,983 barrels of potable water, 3,900 cubic feet of barite/bentonite, 3,900 cubic feet of bulk cement, and storage for 3,000 sacks.
For well control, the rig is equipped with Cameron BOPs, including a single and double “U” ram rated at 13-5/8 inches and 10,000 psi, as well as a Hydril GK annular BOP rated at 5,000 psi. The jacking system, featuring Letourneau/Pinion Gear technology, provides 12 jacking points per leg, with a maximum jacking load of 2,491 kips.
The rig also features a helideck rated for a 6.8 metric ton Bell-412ST helicopter, compliant with CAP 437 standards. Additionally, it is equipped with multiple cranes, including Letourneau PCM 120 cranes with lifting capacities of 50 and 42 short tons, and boom lengths of 100 and 120 feet, respectively.
